Hi! Well, we hope to have some great events this semester! As always we’ll be hosting our Liquid Nitrogen Ice-cream fundraising event, but probably not until it gets a little warmer (around week 10/11ish). We hope to plan some larger type events - maybe even a party! :D We’ll update this page as soon as we can to keep you all in the loop! :) xx SAMS Exec

Hello,
Whilst I understand your concerns about the so-called elitist nature of the society, I must point out that one of the fundamental purposes of this particular society is to provide a support group for students currently and formerly enrolled in Advanced Science or Advanced Mathematics degree structure. If we were to rename our group to Students of Mathematics/Science (which we won’t): a) we would not be accepted by our student union Arc, as there already exists a science society (SciSoc) and a mathematics society (MATHSOC), b) we would be alienating people who worked hard to be accepted into an Advanced Mathematics or Science degree and who have to do specific subjects (SCIF) for that degree and c) there are plenty of elitist groups within UNSW such as every single degree specific group in the faculty of Engineering, why place so much hate on this particular group?
I wouldn’t say we are “too comfortable on your high horse inside your ivory tower” as we don’t go around promoting our “elitist” nature. It specifically states in our constitution that we welcome any person who wants to be part of the society, whether they do science, mathematics or anything else. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who has not been accepted into the group irrespective of their degree.
